In Iceland, the Fagradalsfjall volcano is expected to erupt, waking up after six thousand years of hibernation. A state of emergency has been declared in the country, writes “MIR 24”.

So, last night, residents of the port city of Grindavik experienced a real nightmare. Magma spread throughout the city, and underground shocks reached such force that local residents had to leave their homes.

There is a threat that lava will come to the surface and the city will go underground. However, even experts cannot say when this will happen. A huge crack has already cut through Grindavik. Steam rises from it. Water supply and electrical systems were damaged.

People were permitted to return to their homes briefly to pick up essentials. Each house is given no more than five minutes to get ready. Nobody knows what might happen in the next second. Local residents are accompanied by search and rescue teams.

“We make sure that no one stays in the house for a long time. You need to act quickly - take the most valuable things and move on”, - said an employee of the Reykjavik search and rescue team.

A record 1400 earthquakes have been recorded in Iceland over the past 24 hours. Since the end of October, seismic activity has increased on the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the Fagradalsfjall volcano is located.
