The methane emission reduction training was held in a hybrid format in Ashgabat. This is reported by the publication “Turkmenistan: Golden Age”.

Organized by the United Nations Office in Turkmenistan in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the training was designed to promote strategic action on methane management and ways to reduce its emissions in the country.

The participants were introduced to the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO). Best practices in this area and methods for detecting and measuring outliers were also presented.

Vladimir Valetka, economist at the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator, said that more than half of Turkmenistan's methane emissions could be reduced at no net cost. The country's estimated methane emissions of about 5 million metric tons in 2021 could be converted into 77 billion kilowatt hours (TWh) of electricity.

“Turkmenistan has one of the greatest potentials for low-cost reduction of methane emissions. The country must play a key role in curbing climate change”, - said Dmitry Shlapachenko, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan.
