The Kazakh national company QazaqGaz has signed a contract with the State Concern "Turkmengas" for the import of Turkmen gas." The President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev told journalists about this following the results of today's talks in Astana with his Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedov, Kazinform correspondent reports.

“Our companies QazaqGaz and “Turkmengas“ signed contracts for the import of Turkmen gas,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said at a briefing, expressing gratitude to the President of Turkmenistan for his personal support in promoting this project.

Earlier it was reported that by 2024 Kazakhstan intends to stop exporting its gas and start buying "blue fuel" from neighboring countries. The reason for the revision of the national energy policy is the increased demand for natural gas within the country.

“We are interested in concluding a long-term agreement and are ready to increase the volume of gas imports to 1,5 billion cubic meters per year. Kazakhstan is ready to participate in the implementation of major energy initiatives of Turkmenistan, exchange experience, develop mutually beneficial projects in the field of gas processing and gas chemistry. Taking into account the interest of both parties, the Government was instructed to work out these areas as well,” the President of Kazakhstan emphasized.

Thus, Kazakhstan becomes the third long-term buyer of turkmen gas, which is currently also supplied to China and Russia.

Turkmenistan ranks fourth in the world in terms of natural gas reserves after Russia, Iran and Qatar.
