In the southeast of Turkmenistan, in the Lebap velayat, a new pit is being built for a reservoir, the capacity of which will be 3,85 billion m3. The new reservoir is being created next to the largest reservoir in the country, named after the 15th anniversary of independence, reports the “Neutral Turkmenistan” newspaper.

At the same time, it is noted that the reservoir named after the 15th anniversary of independence is connected by canals with the Amu Darya and the Karakum River, and serves as a filter for settling sand and silt, which are rich in Amu Darya water.

So that the reservoir does not lose its function during natural silting, there is a continuous build-up of its sides and bulk dams, located around the circumference of the catchment.

“In order to continue the life of the largest water storage facility in the country, the construction of which began in the 80s of the last century, and the first start-up complex was launched at the end of the XX century, hydraulic engineers developed a plan for its renewal in several stages,” says the report.

The plan is to significantly raise earth mounds around the vault to increase its surface area and the amount of moisture it can store.

In the near future, it is planned to create a third pit in this region. At the moment it is at the stage of design work. It is noted that in the future, these three giant reservoirs will strengthen the country's water supply.
