UN structures and the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan discussed cooperation in the promotion and protection of human rights

A meeting of the UN country team with the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan Yazdursun Gurbannazarova was held in Ashgabat, in the UN building.

UN agencies were involved in the meeting: UNICEF, UNDP, OHCHR Regional Office for Central Asia, UNODC and UNFPA.

The parties discussed issues of bilateral and multilateral cooperation with the Office of the Ombudsman in the promotion and protection of human rights in Turkmenistan.

UN Resident Coordinator Dmitry Shlapachenko noted:

“The UN and the Government of Turkmenistan have a long history of cooperation in the field of human rights. I am pleased to note that the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights, as a new established human rights institution, is receiving great support in building its capacity, provided by the UN system in Turkmenistan.”

The Ombudsman of Turkmenistan highly appreciated the partnership with UN agencies on human rights issues and assured of strengthening and expanding cooperation in studying the process of accreditation of the Office in the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), promotion and protection of the rights of children, youth and women, and also preventive measures in the fight against corruption and raising public awareness of human rights in general, reports the press release of UN.
