The State Medical University of Turkmenistan named after Myrat Garryev is included in the World Directory of Medical Schools, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reports. The corresponding official letter on behalf of WHO was sent to the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan.

The mission of the World Directory is to compile a list of all medical schools in the world with accurate, up-to-date and comprehensive information about the school. And its main goal is to help applicants and regulatory authorities in the field of medicine make informed decisions regarding medical universities and their graduates, as well as to inform researchers and members of the public about the features of current as well as past medical education curricula around the world.

The World Directory is a joint venture of the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). The Directory was created by merging the information contained in the International Directory of Medical Education FAIMER (IMER) and the WFME Directory "Avicenna". Both organizations are collaborating to identify new schools to include in the catalog and update existing school records.

The inclusion of the University in the World Directory of Medical Schools entitles its graduates to continue their medical education in prestigious universities abroad, thereby gaining ample opportunities to add to their experience and medical skills.

The University was founded in 1931 under the name of the Turkmen State Medical Institute. In 2010, the TSMI was abolished, and the State Medical University of Turkmenistan was established on its basis, was its successor with the transfer of all the premises and equipment of the Institute to the new University. Since

September 1, 2010, the University has been located in a new building on Archabil Avenue. In 2019, by the Resolution of the Parliament of Turkmenistan, the SMUT was named after the political and public figure Myrat Garryev.
