Within the framework of SWAP contract, Iran, by supplying Turkmen natural gas to Azerbaijan, will be able to meet the gas needs of its 5 northern provinces.

"The signing of this agreement has taken a step forward in energy relations between the two countries, and this agreement will help provide sustainable winter fuel for Khorasan Razavi province, North and South Khorasan, and Golestan and Semnan provinces."

Having large deposits of natural gas in the south, Iran has been importing gas from Turkmenistan since the late 1990 to provide its northern provinces with fuel in winter, notes the source.
