Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan signed a gas swap agreement

Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan signed a trilateral agreement on swap gas supplies in Ashgabat today, the IRIB TV and Radio Broadcasting Corporation reported.

According to the agreement, from 1.5 to 2 billion cubic meters of gas will be sent from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan through Iran every year.

As noted by the Mehr editions, this contract is unlimited. Its implementation will begin on December 22 of this year.

According to Mehr, Iran will be able to meet the gas needs of its five provinces by supplying Turkmen natural gas to Azerbaijan under a SWAP contract.

The swap scheme for the supply of Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan implies that Ashgabat will export its fuel to Iran, and Iran, in turn, will supply its own gas to Baku. Such export schemes through third countries are used when there is no ready infrastructure for the direct transfer of hydrocarbons, in this case a gas pipeline connecting Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.
