New laboratory equipment for environmental monitoring is being mastered in Turkmenistan

Today, Ashgabat hosted a training seminar “Practical application of new laboratory equipment and capacity building of the environmental monitoring and control system”, which was held within the framework of the joint project of UNDP and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection “Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan: Integrated Development of Green Cities in Ashgabat and Avaza”.

According to a UNDP press release, the event was attended by specialists from chemical laboratories of the Environmental Control Service of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan.

The UNDP project specialists discussed with the workshop participants the technical aspects of the existing environmental monitoring system in Turkmenistan and familiarized themselves with the methods of using new equipment for monitoring environmental pollution purchased under the project.

The new laboratory equipment includes modern instruments and methods for determining the concentrations of pollutants contained in industrial emissions and other sources of air pollution.

Victoria Akopova, UNDP Project Specialist, noted:

“This equipment was purchased to assist the work of specialists of ecological laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan. Their use of the latest modern technologies will allow them to carry out effective environmental monitoring necessary to protect the environment.”

The project “Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan: Integrated Development of Green Cities in Ashgabat and Avaza” provides technical, institutional and strategic support. The project promotes behavior change with regard to sustainable consumption and waste management, covering Ashgabat and Avaza, and also creates a basis for applying the achieved positive results in other cities of Turkmenistan.

The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and UNDP.
