During the plenary session of the international forum “Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan-2021”, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Dmitry Shlapachenko sent a video message to the forum participants, in which he highly appreciated the efforts of the government of Turkmenistan to promote initiatives in the field of sustainable energy at the regional and global levels.

“In this regard, the calls of the President of Turkmenistan to develop a UN strategy on measures to develop low-carbon energy and to create an international “Roadmap” for the development of hydrogen as one of the priority areas in the energy sector under the auspices of the UN are interesting,” he said.

He noted the active position of Turkmenistan in promoting safe and reliable transit of energy within the framework of creating mechanisms for global energy security, as evidenced by two resolutions of the UN General Assembly in 2008 and 2013, authored by Turkmenistan.

Turkmenistan also contributes to the formation of an International Expert Group on the development of the UN international legal mechanism, which will ensure compliance with the general principles of doing business in the global energy space.

“From a practical point of view, the mega-project initiative of Turkmenistan - the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline - is an example that can support the implementation of the UN General Assembly resolution on stable energy transit, as well as ensure sustainable development in countries, along with large investments and job opportunities for thousands of people and communities that might not otherwise exist. Projects such as TAPI are a vivid example of the indivisibility and integration of global economic development, peace and security, as well as climate programs,” Shlapachenko stressed.

Such projects aimed at expanding access to energy in the region can be seen as a contribution to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. They are important because they transcend national boundaries, national and regional centers and are expected to distribute development benefits widely and fairly, he said.
