Yesterday, at a briefing in Geneva, WHO press Secretary Tarik Jasarevich commented on the statement made by Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 11 about the registration of a coronavirus vaccine in the country.

In particular, Tarik Jasarevic noted that the representatives WHO are in close contact with the Russian health authorities and discuss the question of a possible pre-qualification of the vaccine. The WHO prequalification process for any vaccine includes a thorough review and evaluation of all necessary safety and efficacy data collected during clinical trials.

"In other words, WHO should say whether this drug meets the standards of vaccine production at the international level and is safe," he said.

Now it is necessary to invest all funds to accelerate the results of the development of safe and effective treatments and vaccines against COVID-19, said Jasarevich, stressing that the process cannot be accelerated at the expense of safety.

According to the head of the WHO, this week the number of detected cases of COVID-19 may reach 20 million, and the number of deaths may exceed 750 thousand, the UN press service reports.

Earlier, we reported that Putin announced the registration of the world's first coronavirus vaccine.
