Preparations for this sporting event are proceeding according to the planned schedule. Currently, the construction of a sports town for participants of competitions is underway around the clock. The first building is scheduled to be completed on May 16, and the remaining structures — until September 30.

Athletes will demonstrate their skills in 17 sports, including swimming, water Polo, beach athletics, basketball, volleyball, handball, football, wrestling, boat rowing, sailing, surfing and others.

The Asian beach games are sports competitions held once every two years among athletes from Asian countries. Traditionally, the Games include competitions in water sports (swimming, sailing, water Polo), beach versions of certain sports (football, volleyball, basketball, Sambo, bodybuilding, handball), as well as mixed sports, which are a combination of competitions on land and water.

The first Asian beach games were held in 2008 in Bali, Indonesia. Sanya is not the first Chinese city to host the competition. In 2012, the Games were held in Haiyang city in Shandong province in Eastern China. In different years, the competition was also held in Indonesia (2008), Oman (2010), Thailand (2014) and Vietnam (2016).
