Yellow alert in 63 Turkish provinces due to severe weather

A powerful storm with strong winds and heavy rains hit Istanbul, causing widespread destruction: roofs were torn off buildings, trees were uprooted, and many roads were turned into lakes, the Hürriyet newspaper reports.

According to the city's municipal authorities, 69 weather-related incidents were recorded in the city. These included 26 cases of fallen trees and broken branches, 16 roof failures, 23 damage to structures, poles, signs, and billboards, and damage to 12 vehicles. No casualties were reported.

Adverse weather conditions also affected other regions of Türkiye. In Bodrum, two boats sank, and another sailboat ran aground. In Izmir, heavy rains flooded streets, avenues, shops, and hotels. The storm closed the Dardanelles Strait to transit shipping in both directions.

Istanbul authorities have urged residents to exercise caution. Türkiye’s General Directorate of Meteorology has issued a yellow alert for 63 provinces, including Istanbul and Ankara, due to the expected sharp drop in temperatures.
