Turkmenistan's gas exports to Afghanistan via the TAPI pipeline section currently under construction could reach approximately 500 million cubic meters per year in the first phase, with plans to increase this to 1,5 billion cubic meters annually. This was announced by Maksat Babayev, Chairman of the “Turkmengaz” State Concern, at a press conference following the OGT 2025 International Conference and Exhibition held in Ashgabat.
"According to the contract with the Afghan Gas Company, the volume is set at 500 million cubic meters per year in the first few years. The pipeline infrastructure in Afghanistan is currently underdeveloped. Subsequently, supplies are expected to reach 1,5 billion per year," Babayev said. He noted that an increase to 3-4 billion cubic meters annually is possible in the future.
The Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India gas pipeline is designed to transport up to 33 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Turkmenistan's Galkynysh field. According to the project, 5 billion cubic meters will be supplied to Afghanistan, and 14 billion cubic meters each to Pakistan and India.
Construction of the 214-kilometer Turkmen section of the pipeline has been completed. Construction of the 153-kilometer Afghan section between Serhetabat and Herat began in September 2024. Construction work is currently underway in Afghanistan.
The International Conference and Exhibition "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan 2025" (OGT 2025) was held in Ashgabat from October 22-24.
