US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose additional 100% tariffs on imports from China starting in November. He announced this on the social media platform TruthSocial.
The US will also impose export controls on critical software. The decision follows Beijing's tightening of rare earth metal export regulations.
Trump called China's actions "hostile" and announced the possible cancellation of a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He later clarified that he had not officially canceled the meeting, but expressed doubts about its possibility. "I'll still be there," the US president told reporters at the White House.
