Caterpillar Inc., a global leader in construction, mining, and energy generation and storage equipment used in all industries, including oil and gas production, celebrated its centennial. The anniversary falls on April 15, 2025. Over the course of a century, the company has grown into a global giant, with the Cat® brand ranked 81st among the 100 strongest brands in the world.
The company's history began in 1925, when two rival entrepreneurs—Benjamin Holt, famous for developing the first commercially successful tracked vehicles, introducing tracks instead of wheels in 1904 to solve the problem of moving tractors through swampy fields, and Clarence Leo Best, who focused on the development of gasoline technology—joined forces and created a new tractor company called Caterpillar.
The company's famous name was born by chance in March 1905. Photographer Charlie Clements, observing Holt's new tractor being tested, noticed the movement of the tracks and exclaimed that the machine crawled "like a big caterpillar." The comparison was so popular that in 1910, Holt registered the name "Caterpillar" as a trademark.
Interestingly, the famous yellow color of Cat® equipment didn't appear overnight. Until 1931, all vehicles were painted battleship gray. The company then switched to Hi-Way Yellow, which was replaced by today's "Caterpillar Yellow" in 1979.
Today, Caterpillar is one of the industry leaders in terms of investment in research and development. The company is actively developing alternative fuels, digitalization, autonomous technologies, connectivity, and electrification.
