Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has announced the discovery of a major gas field in the Ustyurt region of Karakalpakstan in the northwest of the country, the head of state's press service reported.
According to Mirziyoyev, the deposit was discovered at a record depth of 6500 meters for Uzbekistan. Previously, exploration work in the oil and gas sector in the country was carried out at a depth of 2,5-3 thousand meters.
“For the first time in the history of our industry, a well was drilled at a depth of 6500 meters in Ustyurt and a very large gas field was discovered,” the president said.
The estimated reserves of the discovered gas and the companies conducting the drilling operations are not disclosed.
The head of state also noted that Uzbekistan has significant reserves of technological minerals, including tungsten, molybdenum and titanium. According to his estimates, 10-15% of the world's reserves of such resources are concentrated in the Central Asian region.
