A meeting between members of parliament and representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) took place in the Mejlis of Turkmenistan.
The Turkmen delegation was led by parliamentary representatives, while the OSCE delegation was led by Ulvi Fikret Akhundlu, Ksenia Dashutsina, and Martina Barker-Siganikova.
During the meeting, the parties discussed key areas of work between the Mejlis of Turkmenistan and UN agencies and other authoritative international organizations in strengthening peace and security, as well as promoting the principles of neutrality. Particular attention was paid to Turkmenistan's close cooperation with the OSCE.
Participants noted that effective work is underway in Turkmenistan to improve the electoral and governance systems using international experience.
The parties exchanged views on the maintenance of the State Register of Voters in compliance with the principles of legality and human rights, the implementation of universal suffrage, and the organization of the recording and maintenance of voters' personal data based on the principles of completeness, integrity, reliability, transparency, continuous updating, and security of information.
The storage, reprocessing, and use of voter data, state record-keeping, and ensuring the exercise of citizens' electoral rights were also discussed.
During the meeting, it was noted that Turkmenistan has regulatory legal norms in place to ensure human rights and freedoms, as well as gender equality. National legislation in these areas is constantly being improved, taking into account international experience.
