The E.K. Fedorov Institute of Applied Geophysics reported the registration of a solar flare of class M1.1. The event occurred on August 19 at 07:39 Moscow time in the sunspot group 4188 and lasted about 50 minutes, MIR24 reports.
According to experts, moderate flare activity is predicted in the next two days. Class X flares are possible. The geomagnetic field may be unstable, the radiation situation will remain calm. Shortwave radio communication conditions may worsen during the day.
A coronal hole was previously discovered on the Sun, which will cause medium-level magnetic storms on Earth. The main geomagnetic disturbances are expected on Tuesday, when the solar wind speed reaches 800-900 km/sec.
Solar flares are classified into classes from A to X, depending on the power of the X-ray radiation. When moving from one class to the next, the power increases by 10 times. Flares can be accompanied by emissions of solar plasma, which, when they reach the Earth, can cause magnetic storms.
