American doctors reported a case of a man being hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital after being poisoned by bromide, which he consumed on the recommendation of ChatGPT, the New York Post reports.
The patient was admitted to a medical facility with symptoms of paranoia, hallucinations, and refusal to drink water. He was convinced that he had been poisoned by a neighbor. A medical examination revealed bromide intoxication, after which the patient was placed in a psychiatric ward.
The investigation revealed that the man had been replacing regular salt with bromide purchased online for three months. He made this decision in an effort to reduce his salt intake and followed the advice of the ChatGPT artificial intelligence.
A check conducted by doctors confirmed that the AI system could indeed give such advice without warning about the potential danger.
Doctors note that bromide was previously used for medical purposes, but was excluded from medical practice due to toxic effects with long-term use. Currently, this substance is found only in some veterinary drugs and food additives.
The patient underwent treatment and fully recovered. He was discharged from the hospital three weeks later.
