Southwestern Turkmenistan is one of the most promising areas for iodine mining. The local deposits provide the raw material base for operating chemical enterprises, including the Hazar (Cheleken), Balkanabat and Boyadag iodine mining plants of the State Concern "Turkmenhimiya".
As reported by "Turkmenistan: Golden Age", thermal drilling waters with a high raw material concentration are used as the initial raw material at these plants. Among those currently in operation with an iodine-bromine base, a special position is occupied by "Seitkerderi" and "Kuilyar" in the structure of the Western Kopetdag, on the basis of which the Bereket plant of the State Concern operates.
The volume of iodine raw materials produced annually by Turkmenistan's factories and its reserves have put the country among the world's leaders. The annual iodine production rate is about 525 tons. Such wealth of the country is an attractive factor for foreign companies seeking to enter the Turkmen market and wishing to participate in the extraction of minerals.
The issue of increasing iodine production can be resolved through the development of new industrial water deposits in the Gograndag-Ekerem oil and gas region, the geological structures of Gograndag-Karadashli, Ekerem, Kamyshlydzha, the source notes.
