Prolonged torrential rains in northern China have led to massive flooding and casualties, Interfax reports.
According to Beijing Vice Mayor Xia Linmao, 44 people have died in the Chinese capital, with nine more missing. Sixteen people have died in Hebei Province, including eight in the city of Chengde. Authorities have not been able to contact 18 residents of the region.
Heavy rainfall in the region has continued for a week, peaking on July 28. Chinese President Xi Jinping called for maximum efforts to ensure the safety of citizens and search for missing persons, ordering the immediate relocation of residents from risk areas.
