Italy's Justice Ministry has announced the possibility of releasing more than 10 thousand prisoners, or about 15% of the country's total convicts. The measure is being considered as part of a solution to prison overcrowding.
According to the agency, about 10 105 prisoners "could potentially qualify" for alternative measures to imprisonment. These are people whose convictions have already entered into legal force and are not subject to appeal, who have less than two years left to serve their sentences and who have not committed serious disciplinary offences in the past 12 months.
Alternative measures do not apply to persons serving sentences for serious crimes, including terrorism and organised crime.
According to La Repubblica, almost a third of Italian prisons do not meet established standards for the detention of prisoners. Of the 190 penitentiary institutions in the country, 38 are not overcrowded.
The total number of people serving sentences in Italy is almost 63 thousand people, the Ministry of Justice reports.
