Portuguese footballer of English club "Liverpool" Diogo Jota died in a traffic accident in the Spanish province of Zamora, Marca reported.
Jota was 28 years old and had been playing for "Liverpool" since 2020. He became the English champion, the FA Cup winner and the English League Cup winner with the team. In total, he played 182 matches for the English team, scored 65 goals and made 26 assists. He won the Nations League twice with the Portuguese national team. He previously played for Spanish "Atletico", Portuguese "Porto" and English "Wolverhampton".
"The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the news of the death of Diogo Jota and his brother André this morning in Spain. Diogo Jota was not only a fantastic player who played almost 50 matches for the national team, but also an extraordinary personality, respected by all his teammates and opponents, a man with an infectious joy and an authority in the community," the Portuguese Football Federation said in a statement.
According to Marca, while driving, one of Jota's tires burst, and the car was thrown off the road. After that, the vehicle caught fire. Rescuers arrived at the scene too late. Jota's 26-year-old brother Andre Silva, who played for Portuguese side "Penafiel", was in the car with him. He also died.
