US President Donald Trump said he had found a potential buyer for the US division of Chinese social media platform TikTok. He said this in an interview with Fox News on Sunday, June 29.
According to the American leader, a group of "very rich people" is ready to buy TikTok's business in the US. However, Trump has not yet revealed their names, promising to make this information public "in about two weeks."
The president also noted that the deal would likely require approval from Chinese President Xi Jinping to complete. "I think Chairman Xi will probably give it," Trump said confidently.
The demand to sell TikTok is linked to US authorities' concerns about national security. Washington believes that Beijing could gain access to the personal data of American users through the Chinese concern ByteDance, which owns the platform.
The corresponding law was passed under the previous administration and signed by Trump's predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden. The initial deadline for selling the American division of the social network was set for January 19 - the day before the inauguration of the current president.
However, since taking office, Trump has extended the deadline twice: first until April 5 and then for another 75 days, giving the parties additional time to negotiate and finalize the deal.
