Scientists from Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) have developed a new way to produce fabric from wheat and oat waste. The technology, described in the journal RSC Sustainability, allows textiles to be created without the use of wood or toxic chemicals.
The researchers found that straw and husks are best suited for pulp production due to a simple alkali treatment. This method requires fewer resources than traditional methods and increases the value of agricultural waste.
Scientists are currently working on creating the first samples of fabric and adapting the technology for industry. The development could become a breakthrough in the production of eco-friendly clothing.
