The Chinese animated film "Nezha" Conquers the Dragon King has set a world box office record for cartoons, surpassing the previous leader "Inside Out 2". According to Chinese ticketing platform Maoyan, the film's total box office receipts reached 1,69 billion USD (12,3 billion yuan), making it the eighth-highest-grossing film of all time, daily.afisha.ru reports.
It is noteworthy that almost all the box office receipts (more than 99%) came from the domestic Chinese market. This significantly distinguishes the Chinese blockbuster from Hollywood projects, which usually earn a significant portion of their funds abroad. The premiere of the cartoon took place in China on January 29, and American viewers saw the film on February 15.
The film follows the success of the 2019 film and is based on the classic 16th-century Chinese novel "Investiture of the Gods". The plot centers on a young hero with magical powers who defends the fortified city of Chentangguan.
According to Chinese analysts, the film's final box office receipts could reach 2,19 billion USD (16 billion yuan). This result would allow the cartoon to rise to fifth place in the list of the highest-grossing films in history, behind only such blockbusters as "Avatar", "Avengers: Endgame", "Avatar: The Way of Water" and "Titanic".
