According to the latest study of the American film industry, 2024 has become a turning point in the history of Hollywood – for the first time in history, female and male leading roles in the most successful films of the year were distributed equally, reaching 42% on each side. The remaining 16% were in films with a group cast of leading characters, Film.ru reports with reference to Deadline.
A study conducted by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at the University of San Diego under the direction of Martha Lauzen also revealed significant changes in the content of films. Modern Hollywood is increasingly turning to themes of women overcoming professional discrimination and solving problems in their personal lives.
Experts note significant progress compared to 2023, when only 28% of films were shot from a female point of view, while the male gaze dominated in 62% of films. However, complete equality has not yet been achieved – male characters still occupy 72% of screen time with lines.
According to Lauzen, contemporary films like Substance actively challenge the outdated view of women as interchangeable characters, setting new standards for representation in the film industry.
