Extreme weather events in 2024 disrupted education for 242 million children in 85 countries, according to a new UNICEF report. The main reason for interruptions in education was periods of abnormal heat, which is especially dangerous for children due to their physiological characteristics and less effective thermoregulation of the body, gazeta.ru reports.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting the impossibility of normal learning in conditions of extreme temperatures and natural disasters. Climate shocks have led to the temporary closure of educational institutions at all levels, the forced postponement of school periods and damage to school infrastructure.
The situation is most challenging in South Asia, where some 128 million students are facing disruption to their education. Specifically, 54 million children were affected in India and 35 million in Bangladesh. UNICEF predicts further deterioration of the situation against the backdrop of global warming, noting that about a billion children live in regions at high risk of climate disasters.
