In an interview on the popular Italian TV show Che tempo che fa, Pope Francis announced the upcoming appointment. Sister Raffaela Petrini is preparing to take over as governor of the Vatican, which will be an unprecedented event in the history of the Holy See, pravilamag.ru reports with reference to Vatican News.
The change of leadership will take place in March 2025, when the current governor, Archbishop Fernando Verges Alzaga, reaches the age of 80. Petrini, who has successfully served as the secretary general of the governorate since 2021, will succeed him.
This appointment can be considered truly revolutionary for the Vatican, since throughout the 96-year history of the city-state, the post of governor, the de facto head of government and representative of papal authority, has been occupied exclusively by men.
