German athlete Selina Freitag criticized the organizers of the ski jumping tournament for the inequality in the prize fund: men were awarded money, and women were given shampoos and towels, daily.afisha.ru reports with reference to BR24.
At the prestigious Two-Nights-Tour tournament in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which was held before the New Year, Selina Freitag won, but was outraged by the unfair distribution of prize money.
While male athletes received cash prizes of 3 000 francs (approximately $3 300) for winning the qualification, female winners were given cosmetic sets, including shampoo, shower gel and towels.
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) responded to the incident. FIS Director Sandro Pertile acknowledged the problem and expressed a desire to change the situation. He pointed out that the women’s stage of the tournament was at a disadvantage, as it was held at the end of the day, when the number of spectators was reduced from 10 to 3 thousand people.
The Federation announced its intention to review the format of the competition. In particular, the possibility of optimizing the program by canceling trial starts and holding a single qualification on weekends is being considered.
