An 8-month training course “Fundamentals of medical and social work with a focus on social inclusion of persons with disabilities", organized with the support of UNICEF for the first intake of new graduates in the field of medical and social assistance, has completed in Turkmenistan.

Course participants, along with theoretical topics and information on various modern professional methods, gained deeper knowledge and skills in the field of early child development and early intervention.
This focus aligns with national priorities to develop a skilled workforce to support vulnerable young children and their families.

New professionals also gained knowledge in specific technical areas such as early childhood mental health, physical and occupational therapy, communication, assistive technology and products.

“I am glad to be part of the first cohort of medical and social workers in Turkmenistan. The new knowledge I gained as a result of attending this course will be useful in providing quality services to children and families", - said course participant Gozel Shadurdyeva.

The sessions enhanced the ability of new professionals, who are assigned to selected primary health care settings, to provide social services to promote the inclusion of children with disabilities and their families.

“The introduction of the medical and social worker profession is an important step for Turkmenistan towards ensuring that the needs of vulnerable children and their families are adequately met.
