The UN has appointed the President of the 81st session of the General Assembly

The UN General Assembly has elected Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman as the President of its 81st session, which will begin in September 2026. The Bangladeshi candidate received the support of 99 member states, beating Cyprus's Andreas Kakouris, who received 91 votes.

The President of the General Assembly is elected for one year and is responsible for organizing and directing the work of one of the principal organs of the UN. Their responsibilities include chairing plenary meetings, coordinating committee work, and facilitating consensus among Member States.

Rahman was elected in a vote at UN Headquarters. His term will begin with the opening of the 81st session of the General Assembly in September 2026.

Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is currently presiding over the 80th session of the General Assembly.
