Container traffic through Turkmenistan has increased by 70%

Container traffic through Turkmenistan increased by 70% from January to April 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to Minister of Railway Transport Mammet Akmammedov, speaking at the 84th meeting of the CIS Council on Railway Transport, which is taking place in Ashgabat on May 13–14.

"I would like to note the growth trend in container shipping. Between January and April 2026, it was 70% higher than the same period in 2025," he said.

According to the minister, 25 container trains passed through the country during this period, including 19 trains on the Russia-Iran-Russia and China-Iran routes.

Akmammedov expressed hope for further growth in freight traffic along the Eastern Route of the North-South International Transport Corridor thanks to a coordinated tariff policy and improved quality of transport and logistics services. He also noted that special tariff conditions have been provided for shipments from China, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Belarus to Turkmenistan and third countries to develop this corridor.

Turkmenistan has a well-developed transport infrastructure: the total length of railways is approximately 5,150 km, of which more than 2 thousand km have been built in recent years, the minister added.
