Turkish Airlines tightens rules: what's Important to know about carrying power banks and smart baggage

Passengers flying internationally on Turkish Airlines should check their gadgets and suitcases in advance. The airline has issued a reminder of the current restrictions on the carriage of lithium batteries, from standard power banks to smart suitcases.

The main change concerns safety: all devices with lithium batteries are now subject to stricter controls.

Power banks: cabin only and with restrictions

Only power banks are permitted for carriage:

  • with a lithium metal content of up to 2 g

  • or lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of up to 100 Wh

There are strict rules in place:

  • No more than two devices per passenger

  • Transportation in the aircraft cabin only

  • Each power bank must be protected against short circuits

  • Store them under the seat or in the front pocket, not in the overhead compartment

  • Using or charging them during the flight is prohibited

A separate requirement applies to wireless models: they must be completely turned off and not touch any devices to prevent accidental charging.

Power banks with a capacity greater than 100 Wh or with a lithium content greater than 2 g are prohibited from transport.

Smart suitcases: what to look for

Airlines classify these suitcases into two types:

With non-removable batteries:

  • No more than 0,3 g of lithium metal

  • No more than 2,7 Wh

  • If these values are exceeded, transportation is prohibited.

With removable batteries:

  • Up to 2 g of lithium or up to 100 Wh

  • Up to 15 spare batteries per passenger (in certain cases, a larger number may be approved)

  • A maximum of two batteries with a capacity of 100 to 160 Wh is permitted.

If a suitcase is checked in, the battery must be removed. Removed batteries are transported only in the cabin. The suitcase itself can be carried as carry-on baggage if it fits within the dimensions, or it can be checked in separately.

What does this mean for passengers

The rules have become more specific, and it's now easier to check them before traveling. In short: less power, fewer devices, and more attention to where and how you transport them.

The best solution is to pack your equipment in advance and ensure everything meets the requirements. This will save time at the airport and avoid unpleasant surprises before departure.
