Turkmen chess players won three medals at West Asian Championship in Sri Lanka

The Turkmenistan national chess team won three medals at the West Asian Junior Championships under 20, which ended in Colombo (Sri Lanka). The competitions were held in three disciplines: classical chess, rapid and blitz, the press service of the FST reported.

Leyla Shohradova (rating 1960) became the champion of the rapid tournament, scoring 6,5 points out of seven possible with a time control of 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. The silver medal was won by the representative of India Sri Redi Kirti (6,0 points), the bronze by Sri Lankan K.M. Daamadi Sanudula (5,5 points).

In classical chess, Leyla Shohradova won the silver medal, losing only to Russian Galina Mikheeva. Indian Saranya Devi took third place. Following the tournament, Lala Shohradova earned her first norm for the title of Women's International Master (WIM).

The third medal for Turkmenistan was won by Amanmuhammet Hommadov, who became the bronze medalist of the classical tournament among juniors with a score of 7 points out of 9 possible. The winner was Russian Konstantin Popov (7,5 points), the silver medalist was Kazakhstani Asman Bayantas (7,0 points). Hommadov received the direct title of FIDE Master and earned the first norm to fulfill the requirements of the International Master (IM).

The championship, which took place from June 4 to 12, was attended by 110 athletes from nine countries in the region.
