A local vote has shown that a SpaceX base in southern Texas will soon become a separate city. According to preliminary results, area residents supported this initiative, snob.ru reports citing Bloomberg.
The Starbase base, located in Cameron County, will receive official city status after a vote held on May 3. The initiative arose in December 2023, when more than 70 local residents signed a petition asking to put the issue to a vote. More than 200 people live in this area.
The results of the vote were almost unanimous: out of 177 ballots counted, only four were against. Three city officials were elected at the same time, and all of them have ties to the company - they are current or former SpaceX employees.
Construction of the base began in the 2010s on the Gulf Coast, near Brownsville. This facility is used to test and launch the Starship rocket. In January 2025, local authorities proposed officially recognizing the Starbase name at the federal level.
