Parisians have supported an initiative that will transform 500 city streets into car-free spaces. This will expand pedestrian zones, create bicycle paths and increase the number of green spaces. In addition, it is planned to reduce the number of parking spaces by 10%, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports with reference to Bloomberg.
The initiative, led by Mayor Anne Hidalgo, aims to further transform the face of a city that is already actively moving away from cars in favor of public and active transportation. Since 2020, 300 streets have already been landscaped and cleared of cars under the program.
It is expected that in each district of the city from five to eight streets will become pedestrian. In the spring, consultations with local residents will be held to determine the most suitable streets. The average budget for the transformation of one street will be 500 thousand euros.
According to the Paris City Hall, the initiative was supported by 66% of voters. Commissioner for Green Spaces and Greening Christophe Najdowski noted that Parisians are seeking to increase pedestrian areas, green the city and reduce car traffic, which is confirmed by the high level of support for this initiative.
