The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has decided to terminate the .su top-level domain, originally created for the Soviet Union. As reported to the Russian Institute for the Development of Public Networks (RosNIIROS), which is the domain operator, the shutdown is planned for 2030, writes daily.afisha.ru.
This decision is based on the top-level domain termination policy approved by ICANN in 2022. According to these rules, national domain zones are subject to closure if the relevant country or territory no longer appears in the international standard ISO 3166-1.
It is noteworthy that the .su domain was excluded from the ISO 3166-1 standard back in 1992 after the collapse of the USSR, but continued to function for more than 30 years due to the lack of a clearly formulated policy for deactivating such domains.
Currently, there are about 112 thousand websites registered in the .su domain zone.
