According to an updated study by Professor Hiroshi Yoshida of Tohoku University, the demographic situation in Japan is deteriorating faster than previously thought. If the current trend continues, by January 5, 2720, there will be only one child under 14 left in the country – a whole century earlier than previously predicted, RIA Novosti reports.

A special online clock has been created to track this alarming trend. The new calculations, based on 2024 birth statistics, differ significantly from the forecast made in April 2023, when the critical point was expected on October 27, 2821.

Japan's birth rate has already reached a historic low. Research institutes predict that in 2024, the number of newborns will drop below 700 thousand for the first time – an event that the government had not expected to happen before 2038.

The current demographic structure of the country shows a serious imbalance: children under 15 make up only 11% of the population, while the proportion of people over 65 reaches almost 30%.
