Tech giant Apple has reached a preliminary agreement to pay $95 million to resolve a class-action lawsuit over unauthorized recordings by its Siri voice assistant. According to The Washington Post, although the agreement was reached in December, it is still awaiting judicial approval, snob.ru writes.
The lawsuit, which began five years ago, centers on the issue of unauthorized activation of Siri, which, according to plaintiffs, recorded personal conversations in private spaces – from homes to cars. The plaintiffs accused the company of transferring these recordings to third-party contractors for analysis and subsequent use for advertising purposes.
Despite denying all the allegations, Apple agreed to the terms of the settlement, which provides for the deletion of all audio recordings made before October 2019. Once approved, users will be able to claim compensation of up to $20 per device, provided that the fact of unauthorized activation of Siri during private conversations is confirmed.
The compensation program covers owners of Apple devices purchased between September 2014 and December 2024. To receive the payment, you will need to provide a sworn written statement about cases of spontaneous activation of the voice assistant.
