Specialists from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University conducted a large-scale analysis of the impact of the traditional game of mahjong on the brain activity of older people. The results of the study, published in the scientific publication The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease Article (JPADA), demonstrate the positive impact of the game on mental functions and emotional health, writes snob.ru.

Mahjong is an ancient board game originating from China that uses special dice. It requires concentration, memory, and attentiveness from its participants. The game, which has gained popularity in China, Japan, and other Asian countries, involves four players competing to create winning combinations to earn points.

Hong Kong scientists analyzed 53 previous studies on the effects of mahjong on older people. The study found that regular practice of the game helps preserve memory, develop cognitive functions, and combat depression.

The researchers also noted that mahjong helps maintain social activity among older people. Regular players, especially those over 60, have higher levels of coordination and a more developed social network than their non-playing peers. According to the scientists’ findings, such social interaction reduces the likelihood of developing cognitive disorders and has a beneficial effect on mental health.
