In France, they are planning to implement a project to recycle materials from a decommissioned nuclear power plant. We are talking about the former nuclear power plant in Fessenheim, closed four years ago. After recycling, the materials can get a new life in the form of everyday items – from kitchen utensils to door fittings, euro-pulse.ru reports.

The project envisages the creation of a specialized technology center on the site of the former station. Here, it is planned to convert metal waste with a minimum level of radioactivity into steel and cast iron. Only materials from external structures that have not been in contact with the reactor will be used in production. Components related to the nuclear part of the station will be sent to special recycling facilities.

The initiative is at the stage of public discussion, after which a final decision will be made. However, the project is facing opposition from environmental activists, who believe that even minimal radiation exposure can pose health risks.

It is worth noting that similar technologies are already being used in a number of countries, including Sweden, Germany and the United States.
