The medical community is expressing serious concern about the rapid decline in the effectiveness of antibacterial drugs, gazeta.ru reports with reference to Bild. According to the president of the Society for Infection Therapy, Matthias Ploetz, the situation is so serious that medicine risks returning to the state before the discovery of penicillin.
Experts identify two key factors contributing to this problem. The first is the unnecessary and excessive use of antibiotics, including for the treatment of respiratory diseases when this is not necessary. The second factor is the increase in international travel following the COVID-19 pandemic, which contributes to the spread of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.
Experts warn that uncontrolled use of antibiotics leads to the emergence of resistant microorganisms. According to forecasts, by 2050, infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria could affect the lives of tens of millions of people worldwide.
