The Dunedin Airport administration in southern New Zealand has introduced an unusual restriction for those seeing off passengers. Now no more than three minutes are allotted for farewell hugs in the passenger drop-off area, snob.ru reports with reference to CNN Travel.

For those who need more time to say goodbye, the airport management has an alternative solution. As explained by the airport director Daniel De Bono, the car park has 1200 spaces where you can stay for up to fifteen minutes free of charge – enough time for a longer farewell.

According to De Bono, the decision is based on scientific data: research shows that a 20-second hug is enough to produce oxytocin, the hormone of emotional attachment. The innovation is designed to optimize passenger flow, permitting more people to say goodbye to loved ones without creating congestion.
