Turkmenistan wrestler wins U-20 World Championship gold for first time

Turkmen wrestler Alp Arslan Begenjov became the first ever champion of the U-20 World Youth Championship in freestyle wrestling. This historic success was achieved at a tournament in Pontevedra, Spain, a Turkmenportal correspondent reports.

Alp Arslan Begenjov has demonstrated excellent results throughout the season. At the beginning of the year, he won a bronze medal at the International Junior Tournament of Champions in Antalya, Turkey, then won bronze at the Asian Championship (U-23) in Amman, Jordan. In July of this year, he became the best at the Asian Championship among athletes under 20 in Si Racha, Thailand. And now, the most resounding success – gold at the World Championship (U-20).

In the weight category up to 79 kg, where the champion title was contested by 28 athletes, Alp Arslan confidently passed all stages of the competition. In the qualification, he defeated Mahdi Yousefihajivar (Iran) with a score of 10:0, in the 1/8 finals – Oleksandr Mamrosh (Ukraine) with a score of 10:0, in the quarterfinals – Dmitry Lukashchuk (Belarus) with a score of 10:0, in the semifinals – Amit Amit (India) with a score of 11:0, and in the final he defeated American Zachary D Ryder with a score of 5:0.

Bronze medals in this weight category went to Mahdi Yousefihajivar and Brazilian Leandro Araujo.
