This is the first time that a contestant with a hearing impairment has won the title of "Miss South Africa". Mia le Roux, 28, who works as a model and marketing manager, took home the prestigious crown. This is reported by daily.afisha.ru with reference to the BBC.
In her speech after her victory, Le Roux said she hoped her success would inspire people who feel rejected by society to achieve their wildest dreams. She also emphasized her commitment to helping those who are “financially isolated or limited in opportunities".
“I'm proud to be a deaf woman from South Africa and I know what it's like to be marginalized. Now I know that I was put on this planet to break boundaries, and I did it", - said the new title holder.
Le Roux's story began when she was diagnosed with severe hearing loss at the age of one. She received a cochlear implant to help her perceive sounds, and it took two years of intensive speech therapy before she could speak her first words.
