The Otero family from Naples, Florida, whose home was damaged by falling space debris, sued NASA, demanding compensation in the amount of 80 thousand USD. Mail.ru reports this.

On March 8, 2024, a cylindrical metal panel that broke off from the ISS cargo pallet in 2021 pierced the roof and floor of the Otero family's home, where their son Daniel was at the time. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the house suffered significant damage.

Analysis conducted at the Kennedy Space Center confirmed that the metal fragment, weighing about a kilogram, is indeed part of space debris.

The Otero family's lawyer, Micky Nguyen Worthy, said they intend to seek compensation for financial damages, emotional distress and legal costs. He also stressed that the lawsuit could set a precedent for space debris lawsuits in the private and public sectors.

NASA has 6 months to respond to the lawsuit.
