The World Health Organization (WHO) on June 5 reported the world's first confirmed case of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N2) virus, which was fatal.

A 59 years old resident of the state of Mexico in Mexico was hospitalized and diagnosed with the virus on May 23.

“This is the first laboratory-confirmed case of influenza A (H5N2) virus infection in humans reported worldwide. Although the source of infection in this case is unknown, A (H5N2) viruses were detected in poultry in Mexico”, - WHO said in a statement.

Human infection with avian influenza A(H5N2) is rare but potentially serious. Avian influenza viruses are not usually transmitted from person to person, but people can become infected through direct contact with infected poultry or its meat.
