Prime Minister Narendra Modi won the parliamentary elections in India, which were held from April 19 to June 1 in several rounds, reports vedomosti.ru.

The Prime Minister's party, the “Bharatiya Janata Party” (BJP), despite what was expected to be stiff competition, came out on top, although it fell short of achieving an absolute majority in Parliament, preliminary results show.

The BJP is projected to win around 244 seats in Parliament, down from 303 seats won in 2019. To form a government, 272 seats are needed, which means Modi's party will have to form a coalition with other parties.

These results permit Narendra Modi to retain his post as prime minister for a third term, but for this he will need the support of other political forces. Official election results will be announced this evening.
